I had another conversation with my religious TSA friend. He scares the shit out of me. After the “In God We Trust” conversation, he got upset and asked how we’d keep people behaving if they didn’t believe in God. I said, “I behave (legally speaking) and I don’t believe in God.” I speed a little and I may have run through more than my share of dark yellow lights, but I don’t kill, I don’t steal, I don’t lie. A good portion of the big 10 he is so concerned with. He says that the fear of God is the only thing keeping most people from running wild in the streets, killing and raping everyone.
I said that “no, common sense should be keeping these people in check. If we run wild, we put ourselves in danger. We don’t kill because it is wrong. We don’t rape because it is wrong.”
“But how do you know what is wrong if God doesn’t say it is?”
Because most “successful” societies have these laws in place.
Because God told them to.
No, however they got started, these things are bad to do because of “The Golden Rule”. If I kill someone, then I can be killed by anyone else that just feels like it. If I steal, then I can be stolen from. If we create an unhealthy society, we will have to live in it.
But most people would just run wild and do whatever they wanted to if God wasn’t there to keep them in line.
Really? You honestly believe that if God was taken out of the picture, everyone would go nuts, run wild and do whatever they want with no consequences? Including you?
Yes.
Oh man, you really scare the shit out of me. The reason I don’t kill you is because I feel it would be wrong. The only thing keeping you from killing me is a fear of a god that I firmly believe does not exist?
Yes.
Stay… The… FUCK… Away… From… Me! You are a danger to society and your delusion is only one step away from the same things David Berkowitz heard.
