I need a hobby.  There are no good hobbies that encompass all three of my current restraints.

  • It has to be available according to my schedule.  That means any time of day and flexible enough to be worked on for a few hours or just a few minutes.
  • It has to be free.  I have ZERO available funds.
  • It has to be something I WANT to do.

I can get two of the three but once you factor in cost against desire…  I lose.

Birdwatching can be free, jogging can be free…  I don’t want to do them.
SCUBA is fun…  You can’t just drop everything and dive when you have a free hour on your hands.
My drums can’t be played during the day because of the daycare or at night because of the neighbors or on the weekend because we’re busy every weekend.
Everything else is too damn expensive.

Writing is free and available at any time…  Doesn’t get me out of the house.  Did I mention that requirement?

Maybe the problem is that I am way too needy and have far too many requirements…

  1. Watercoloring… you can do it just about ANYWHERE… you can do it for free (after an initial outlay of $1.99 for a kid’s painting set)… and we might just have the next great watercolor artist! (you could do a Japanese motif, or do a black and white of the horrors of … well, anything!) C’mon, give it a try!

  2. There is a “big” cat rescue organization right around the corner from you. You could volunteer (no cost) (they always need help, or did back when I used to help), it gets you out of the house (another requirement), AND how cool is it to work around those tigers, lions, cougars, spotted and black leopards and artic foxes…who wouldn’t WANT to do that??? It’s right there on Starratt Rd and the website is cattyshack.org A real cool guy runs the place and lives on site. Check them out if you can’t find anything else…it’s close, free and cool!

  3. Becca could even go with you sometimes, if she is available…volunteer info is at http://cattyshack.org/volunteer/volunteer.htm

  4. Unfortunately I have no artistic skill. Give me a triangle and a T-square and I’ll draw you up the most amazing and precise things. But give me a blank canvas and plenty of space, I’m useless. I’m a great mimic though. I can replicate a drawing or painting by looking at the lines and duplicating them but ask me to spin the object just five degrees and I’m lost again. No skills… But painting would be fun to try, possibly learn…

I had heard about the Cat place but never knew it was up by us. That would be an awesome place to do some work. Becca has been doing all kinds of volunteer services and this would be fun to do together. Thanks for the suggestion.

  5. Can always find out what Wade is currently making a project out of and see if any of that interests you..there’s always something going on. Right now I think he’s wanting to make the Denali into an alien spacecraft.
