Is Robin Hood a superhero?  He’s almost never referred to as one.  (I say almost because I’m leaving myself room to be wrong…  I’ve never seen him called one.)

If he’s not, why is Batman?

What about James Bond?

  1. 1 Robin Hood is just a hero because he had regular arrows where Green Arrow’s and Hawkeye’s arrows explode, thus the super nature of their heroism.

2 Bonds was a super spy.

    3 He’s the fucking Batman!

  2. As you know, Robin Hood is a fictional hero but not a super hero. I don’t know why.
Bond is a fictional spy with great toys, not a super hero.
Batman has me stumped. Maybe because he is a member of the Justice League and has super hero friends.

  3. Robin Hood is a Legendary Hero, not a Superhero.
James Bond is a SuperSpy, which makes him a super hero as well, but a special class of one.
Batman has super powers, the most important of which is that he has super human powers of deduction, and a super level focus on a target…He never gives up and never gives in. Hell the guy beat superman in a fist fight, when he was over 50 years old.

And I’ll remind you that super heros can me gadgeteers, Ironman being the top of that list. And Batman is most certainly a gadeteer.

  4. After thinking about it for a few days:
    1 Exploding Arrows.
2 Spies are not always heroes, in the classical sense, since their goals and methods are not always honorable.
    3 Fucking BATMAN!

  5. I don’t like the idea of superheroes not being “super”. Gadgeteers are not superheroes in my book. I think “Super” implies some kind of inhuman or unnatural ability. Superman is not human, he is an ET. Spiderman, Hulk and a dozen others are genetically modified humans. Batman (while he IS awesome) is nothing but a rich, extremely well trained and disciplined human. I am not a comic historian but I know of no plot that introduced the idea that his “powers” could not be duplicated by anyone with the proper physical potential and enough training and bankroll. Same goes for IronMan. Cool heroes, maybe the coolest because they ARE simply human, but still not really “super”.

Of course, arguing the status or rank of superheroes among nerds like us is tantamount to discussing politics and religion… My definition may not agree with yours but it doesn’t mean I think you’re wrong.

But I will say, Bo and Luke Duke had exploding arrows…

  6. Jose – Superheros like super spys are not always heros.

Ghostrider is a superhero, but not always heroic. Wolverine is certainly super, but only rare occasions is he a “hero”. Blade would also fit that moniker.

Morgan – when the gadgets become Super, their creators and users are supers as well, by association. And Superhero != Super Human.
