Worked with some of my TSA buddies again last night. One of them couldn’t wait to start up the conversation we dropped a few weeks ago. He was chomping at the bit to tell me that I was not only going to Hell, but now I was in danger of going to jail.
The conversation began a few weeks ago when they asked me who I was voting for I answered that I still hadn’t made up my mind. I told them that I don’t like McCain or Obama and that the candidate for my party wasn’t anyone I’d vote for either. They asked what party I was and I had to explain the Libertarian party to them. I want government to do the least amount possible and I want them to give up a lot of the power they’ve taken from us. Government should provide the courts, the military, currency and things like that, but they should stay out of our bedrooms and our churches. Government should not have anything to say about religion. One of them points out that the government already has religion on the currency with the “In God We Trust” slogan. I said, “not on my money they don’t.” He bet me a dollar, I pulled out my wallet and showed him that “In God We Trust” has been marked out with a Sharpie on every bill I had. Something I have done for over a year now. Lucky for me and the bet that I wasn’t carrying any coins, I’m not going through the trouble of carrying around a Dremel tool… A few of the other guys laughed and we were interrupted by work before we could carry on the conversation.
So tonight, he runs up to me to tell me that defacing the currency is illegal and that I could go to jail for doing that. I laughed and he said, “dude, this is serious, you could spend 6 months in jail!”
I’ve seen the law pertaining to this. The laws actually differ between paper and coin money. But the law says that anyone that defaces (etc) currency with the intent to defraud or intent to make the note non issuable are guilty. Making a black stripe on the back of the bill is not illegal. Neither is writing your name on it, or marking it with the anti-counterfeiting marker. I am not going to jail, I am not breaking the law. I’m just expressing my disgust at a government that is more concerned with antiquated ideas rather than the war and the economy.
How long did we take for blacks to get basic civil rights? How long before women got the simple right to vote? Now, rather than deal with security and financial stability, they’d rather actively persecute homosexuals because their god tells them gay marriage is wrong. Priorities man, priorities…
Salmon P. Chase can trust in God all he wants. I love my country, but I don’t trust my government and I certainly don’t trust in any god.
